An Ode to the Solfège

A dedication to the Maestra Farida Khanum

A classically musical album of Urdu Bandish-ki-Ghazals.
Ghazal singing is an ancient musical genre and is equally popular in the Indian Subcontinent in the present times. The charm and finesse of Ghazal singing, even today, has its self-attractiveness and mesmerisation.

Ghazal is sung in two ways: Thumri-accented and Bandishi/Khayal-accented. The diva and the living legend, Farida Khanum, is a torchbearer of the Khayal-accented Ghazal singing in the Indian Subcontinent. This album of classically musical Bandish-ki-Ghazals is a link to this accentuation of her's.

Special attention has been paid to each Ghazal, inregards, to the Khayalic embellishments such as: the Sargam/Solfège, slow-medium Laya/Andantè-Moderato and brief Mordentès.

In addition, this album has incorporated Ghazals penned by, both Indian and Pakistani, Poetesses and have been sung by female Singers only.

For each Bandish-ki-Ghazal, RSMM has selected those Ragas that are rarely heard in Ghazal singing. Furthermore, the Talas we have mostly selected are also of the Khayalic realm, to maintain the Bandishi-accentuation.

This album of classically musical Bandish-ki-Ghazals is dedicated to the one and only, the great and Queen of Ghazals, Farida Khanum, to her stentorian voice, to her musical command and to her special attention to sensitivity and enunciation in Ghazal singing. We pay our obeisances to her, her art form and her successive lifelong effort towards Ghazal singing, its acceptance and dispersion in the world.
